Dear Teachers, Youth Leaders, and others who wish to use our lesson plans:

Thank you for choosing the KOG Ranger Program to teach the values of Oregon’s forests, the types of human behaviors that cause wildfires, and the ways kids can help prevent those wildfires.

These lessons target kids 8-12 and include nine lesson plans giving an overview of each lesson, objectives to be met, materials needed for the lesson, and background information.  All teaching materials are provided as are pages for the Rangers. These activities can be done either in a classroom setting or out in the forests.  We hope you’ll use the forests.

Also included are a pretest and posttest. We ask that you use these tools to help us know how much the kids really learn from the lessons.  Here’s what we ask you to do.

  • Before starting any lessons, give the kids the sheet that says “How Much Do I Know?”  They’ll probably think they know it all (and maybe they do), but it gives us a starting point.  Then, teach the lessons (we suggest one lesson per meeting).  Record the score on the score sheet below. Determine the percentage of knowledge by dividing the score by 14 (the number of questions).  Record on the score sheet.

  • After teaching the lessons, give the “How Much Do I Know Now?” posttest. Record the answers on the score sheet.  Again, determine the percentage as above.  Then, in the last column, record the percentage of increase (decrease) that occurred.

  • Mail the score sheet to us with that information.  We’ll make sure your kids get t-shirts and a certificate of completion for their new knowledge.

  • If, at any time, you have questions about the lessons or the procedures, please don’t hesitate to give me a call.

Again, thanks for using our materials.  While these lessons were piloted before each age group, we hope you’ll make any recommendations that could have made the lessons easier, better, more engaging, etc. for your group.

If, at any time, you have a concern or suggestion, please feel free to call me at:
